ACHIEVEMENT: The Melbourne City Council Small Business Development Fund financially supports businesses promoting environmental sustainability.

TARGET DATE: July 2000 PROGRESS: Achieved.

DESCRIPTION: The City of Melbourne has established a Small Business Development Fund, which provides financial assistance to innovative businesses in the City of Melbourne. $1.5 million is made available annually to provide grants of up to $50,000 per successful application. Previously, the contribution of a business to environmental sustainability was not taken into account in reviewing applications. In addition to making environmental sustainability central to City Plan 2010, I successfully moved to have environmental sustainability added as a criteria in the evaluation of new application. The first objective of the Small Business Development Program is now to: "Encourage the attraction, establishment, growth and retention of sustainable small businesses and business support groups that enhance the City of Melbourne's reputation for innovation, business vitality and environmental sustainability."

FURTHER INFORMATION: Information on the City of Melbourne Small Business Development Fund is available under the 'business' menu at the Melbourne City Council website.

Information on how to green your business is available online, having been produced by the Ethical Business Network - Australia. The kit is an on-line kit to help small-to-medium sized businesses improve their economic and environmental performance by taking action in areas such as water use, energy use, waste minimisation and ethical investment and can be found on the Ethical Business Network website at http://news.ethicalbusiness.com.au/.
