ACHIEVEMENT: Street theatre is regularly used as a way of educating people about environmental and social issues such as littering, homelessness, laughing, having fun and caring about people.
| TARGET DATE: June 2004 |
PROGRESS: None to date. I will discuss this with the arts community and council administrators to see how this idea can evolve. I welcome more suggestions. |
DESCRIPTION: People often learn more and faster when they are having fun. Green Street Theatre could be used around Melbourne to let people have fun while learning and thinking about environmental, social and economic issues that many of us care about and can be usefully reminded about.
I see some possibilities as: having clowns do skits in the street on littering, murals evolving in prominent places dealing with social and other issues and theatre groups within Melbourne being encouraged to do short skits on issues they see as important.
One example that has already occurred is the moving bed in the City, in which people spent up to an hour sleeping in the bed that was wheeled along the city streets as a reminder that some people amongst us experience different realities when setting out to sleep at night.
FURTHER INFORMATION: This idea occurred to me while listening to Dr. Deborah Roberts of the City of Durban, South Africa, presenting at the 2003 ICLEI World Congress in Athens on ideas they have explored in communicating to people with mixed literacy skills in their city.

Cool Green Tip Of The Week -
23 April 2017: Only those who decline to scramble up the career ladder are interesting as human beings. Nothing is more boring than a man with a career: Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, The Gulag Archipelago 1918 -1956.
