ACHIEVEMENT: The Envirolink Newsletter has been re-established.

TARGET DATE: September 2003 PROGRESS: Achieved.

DESCRIPTION: Envirolink was a local community environmental initiative that brought local residents, businesses, schools and community groups together to work on projects such as Clean Up days, tree planting, and environmental monitoring (Airwatch and Streamwatch). Committed and passionate individuals such as Helen Houghton in the South Parkville Precinct Environment Group and in North were involved.

The Envirolink newsletter was an important source of information sharing and stakeholder involvement and participation. As a result of the links formed through Envirolink, the World Environment Day Group was established to co-ordinate World Environment Day celebrations and was an excellent example of co-operation between organisations including DNRE, EPA, The Wilderness Society, Scouts, Parks Victoria and Streamwatch.

Due to the large number of printed publications produced and distributed by Melbourne City Council, and their preference for marketing the city rather than grassroots engagement of the community, my view is that it would be very difficult to re-establish and sustain a community based newsletter at the moment.

I am considering establishing an electronic newsletter from my website that can be subscribed to on an opt in basis. I could incorporate the information that would have been included in the Envirolink newsletter as a means of getting interest established again. I am interested in your views on whether a newsletter would be supported by people using this site and people in the City of Melbourne. Please contact me at: david@davidrisstrom.org.

FURTHER INFORMATION: 27 Aug 2006: The City of Melbourne has relaunched a community environment newsletter in the from of the 'Green Leaflet'.

The Green Leaflet is a wonderfully informative monthly email newsletter available at no cost to subscribers. To receive the Green Leaflet emailCity of Melbourne enquiries and send an email asking to receive the Green leaflet.
