MONTHLY, 6 MONTHLY OR YEARLY MET TICKETS AT 10% DISCOUNT FOR CITY WORKERS

ACHIEVEMENT: Discounted monthly, 6 monthly and yearly MET public transport tickets are available to workers in the City of Melbourne.

TARGET DATE: December 2003 PROGRESS: Some.

DESCRIPTION: Discounted monthly, 6 monthly and yearly MET public transport tickets are available to workers in the City of Melbourne.

As a means of increasing public transport patronage, reducing the need for enforcement and the cost of administering the ticket system, I proposed in a January 2002 letter to the public transport operators that the City of Melbourne be a pilot for providing discounted tickets to residents of the City of Melbourne. The public transport operators agreed with this idea and have committed to progressing it.

I expect that as a logical extension of this relationship, that the Met ticket sellers will extend the commuter Club arrangements to workers in businesses who are prepared to engage in the scheme.

By progressively contacting City businesses and inviting them to join the Commuter Club, I want to extend the opportunity for city workers to choose to use public transport at a discount.

I introduced the Commuter Club to the City of Melbourne staff in 2000. This provides an opportunity for staff to elect to choose to use public transport at a discount, and for the cost of the ticket to be reimbursed to the City by salary sacrifice. The tickets are provided to staff at a 10% discount by the public transport operators and paid for up front by the City of Melbourne The City of Melbourne is then reimbursed through regular payroll deductions from the staff member. Multi-modal tickets for any zone combination are available. I negotiated the 10% discount for the City of Melbourne for 2002, which has been subsequently been re-offered.

In the scheme made available to residents, I expect the most expeditious means of selling the tickets is to arrange for residents providing proof of residency to but the discounted tickets directly from MET ticket sellers.

As Convener of the Metropolitan Environment Forum, I have proposed that if the City of Melbourne pilot is successful, that the Metropolitan Environment Forum use its influence to extend the scheme to other Council's willing to participate. Further information on this can be found at the website of the Metropolitan Environment Forum.

I will make further contact with the Public Transport Authorities in April 2003.

FURTHER INFORMATION: I will post information on if and how your organisation can join the Commuter Club when I confirm its availability in 2003.
