100 GREEN ACHIEVEMENTS

COUNCIL FOR THE FUTURE

ACHIEVEMENT: The community have a regular opportunity to meet and talk about issues of importance to them in the future and what role Council can play in getting there.

TARGET DATE: June 2004 PROGRESS: Some.

DESCRIPTION: Short term electoral cycles focus politicians minds on the present. However many of us may still be alive in three, six, twelve, fifty or even an hundred years time. This council is for us. Anyone with an interest in the future can come and create an interpretation of the future based on current information and trends. Speak out for the ageing population, the diminishing younger population, the aquifers, the health of the soil, anything you think important. Envisage different futures and discuss how to get there from here.

Council has initiated Community Forums and continued the peoples Forums I initiated in 2000. While these forums have been open to the community to set the agenda, and have often dealt with important local and immediate issues, I will introduce an item to these forums as a means of opening the longer term governance issues that a Council For The Future should be considering.
