ACHIEVEMENT: $100m worth of City business is compliant with ISO 14000.

TARGET DATE: December 2003 PROGRESS: Some.

DESCRIPTION: The ISO-14000 series of international standards have been developed for incorporating environmental aspects into operations and product standards. In September 1996, the international committee finalised the ISO 14001 standards for environmental management systems. Similar to the Quality Management System implemented for ISO 9001, the ISO 14001 requires implementation of an Environmental Management System in accordance with internationally recognised standards. The ISO 14001 standard specifies requirements for establishing an environmental policy, determining environmental aspects & impacts of products/activities/services, planning environmental objectives and measurable targets, implementation & operation of programs to meet objectives & targets, checking & corrective action, and management review. [This information is sourced from the ISO 14000 Information Centre website].

I put this policy forward for inclusion in our priorities during a Council planning session in February 2003, and was well received. The actioning of the Melbourne City Council City Plan 2003 now reflects this goal, though formal accounting of the number of businesses in the City of Melbourne with ISO 14000 accreditation has not been done to date.

I moved an amendment in 2001 to the City of Melbourne's Small Business Development Grant Program to include a criteria for contributing to environmental sustainability in the City of Melbourne.

I initiated the establishment of the $5M Sustainable Melbourne Fund, which provides funding for activities which further environmental sustainability

I launched the Melbourne Sustainable Business Directory on on behalf of the City of Melbourne in 2000. The Melbourne Sustainable Business Directory promotes sustainability through their products or services. It is available in hard copy from the Town Hall and online at www.melbourne.vic.gov.au/sustainable business.
